[Event Recap] Special Olympics UNcathlon
This year Infinity had the honor of partnering with Don’s Appliances to fundraise for the UNcathlon benefitting the Special Olympics. For those of you who have never heard of this awesome event, the UNcathlon is a one-of-a-kind team challenge similar to a decathlon, but with eleven events. There are ten physical and mental challenges, ranging from strength and agility, to speed and endurance. The eleventh, and perhaps the most important challenge, is fundraising in support of the near 20,000 Special Olympics athletes across Pennsylvania! All of the money raised goes toward providing training and competitions free of charge to the dedicated participants in Special Olympics events.
The UNcathlon embodies the daily goal of the Special Olympics: inclusion and acceptance through sport! As an active and challenge-seeking group, Infinity was very excited to participate.
The first step to getting involved was a fun night of fundraising at the “Tacos & Tequila” event held at the Don’s Watersource Showroom in East Liberty. The showroom is a very modern and unique event space. While it is filled with beautiful displays of luxury bath tubs and shining hardware, the showroom is also equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen, where Chef Anthony Marino prepared all of the delicious bites for the night.
Guests mingled and tasted a wide variety of Mexican fare while live DJ pumped up the party atmosphere with dance music. There was a wine ring toss set up in a gorgeous walk-in shower display, and three gift baskets being raffled off to add to the fundraising element. All of this was enjoyed while sipping on the “Plata o Plomo” signature cocktail mixed and poured by none other than our very own Infinity “bartenders”! In total, the event raised over $4,000 to go toward the UNcathlon.
The next step in the process was preparing a team for the event. UNcathlon teams are co-ed groups of five, paired with a Special Olympics athlete. Our most athletic Infinity team members gathered at Schenley park early on a Sunday morning for some competition, sportsmanship and FUN! Our team performed valiantly, and it was amazing to see how hard all of the athletes involved work to prepare themselves for their events.
The UNcathlon is such a wonderful event that sends an important message of teamwork and inclusion to athletes from all walks of life. We hope to participate again next year!
